Thanks again to John Blevins for transcribing this and sharing it with all of us. There a lot of great ideas and lines in this solo to learn from so I hope you enjoy it. The transcription starts at the beginning of the recording with the melody. Included here are mostly clarinet solos, but also a couple of tenor saxophone solos, from Lester Young and Ken Peplowski, who are also clarinetists, and thus their tenor solos translate to clarinet really well. I did my best to try to figure out the chords for those 8 measures and this is what I came up with:īob is one of my favorite tenor sax players so this is a treat to check out. This added extension happens throughout the recording and starts on measure 29. Mintzer adds an extended pedal section that extends the tune for 4 extra measures. John didn’t include the chords in this transcription but for the most part this arrangement follows the general chord change in the Real Book although the tune is usually 32 measures long and Mintzer’s arrangement is 36 measures long. Usually a solo takes me like 3-4 hours to complete. Why? Because they are usually too darn fast! (Same reason I don’t transcribe a lot of Coltrane, Brecker and Bergonzi solos…….) This solo seemed a bit more medium tempo so I gave it a shot. I discovered Sam a few years ago but this is the first saxophone solo of his that I have attempted to transcribe. I’d like to introduce the saxophone world to Sam Dillon if you don’t already know him. Here is another burnin’ tenor sax solo by another relatively young sax player I discovered on Youtube.
